After Google unveiled the Pixel Fold this week, Apple remained the only major smartphone maker in the world without a foldable model in its portfolio. The company found itself on the sidelines of a trend that promises multibillion-dollar revenues in the future, Bloomberg notes.

Although Apple started working on a foldable iPhone many years ago, the company has not yet shown any serious interest in bringing such a device to market. This approach is not unusual for Apple – in Cupertino they often prefer to join an already established category, offering a more modern gadget.

When it hit the market in 2007, the iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone, but it revolutionized it. Apple also has no incentive to redesign its current iPhone line since it already dominates the premium smartphone market.

Jusi Hong, an analyst at Omdia, told Bloomberg that the foldable smartphone segment is not yet big enough to take a significant share from the iPhone, which held 77% of the $751-plus device market last year.

According to Neil Mauston, director of research at Strategy Analytics, the release of a non-ready-to-market foldable smartphone could destroy the entire iPhone business. “If by 2025, when the industry’s revenue approaches tens of billions of dollars, Apple doesn’t have a foldable iPhone or iPad on sale, then we’ll start to worry a little bit,” he said.

Currently, foldable devices are only available with the Android platform, and Samsung is the leader in this market. The Korean company competes with Google as well as Chinese brands including Xiaomi, Huawei, Tecno, Vivo, Oppo and Honor.
