Bulgarian students won silver and bronze medals from the European Olympiad in Experimental Sciences EOES 2023, which was held from April 29 to May 6, 2023 in the capital of Latvia – Riga. A total of 45 teams participated in this year’s edition of the Olympiad.

The team of tenth graders Lora Lukmanova (physics) – Sofia Mathematical High School “Paisiy Hilendarski”, Stoyan Dobrev (chemistry) and Alexander Vladimirov (biology) – both from the National Natural Science and Mathematics High School “Acad. Lyubomir Chakalov”, was awarded with silver medals, announced the Institute of Electronics of the BAS.

Bronze medals were awarded to tenth graders Raya Shikova (physics) – PMG “Acad. Ivan Gyuzelev” Gabrovo, Stefan Spasov (chemistry), Sofia Mathematical High School “Paisiy Hilendarski” and Alexandra Nikolova (biology) from PPMG “Acad. Nikola Obreshkov” Burgas.

The heads of the two Bulgarian teams are Dr. Hristina Andreeva (physics, coordinator for Bulgaria, Institute of Electronics of BAS and SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”), Dr. Kalina Pachedzhieva (biology, SU “St. Kliment Ohridski”) and Vladimir Tsvetkov (chemistry, “Abraham Lincoln” ChSUCP).

In the tasks of the first competition day, the students solved tasks inspired by the upcoming summer song and dance festival of Latvia. They investigated the caloric content of different foods, how energy from food gets to the muscles so we can dance, and analyzed the role of enzymes in muscle metabolism. They also described and created sound sources and resonators such as a model of the larynx and oral cavity, for the simulation of vowel sounds, with which they simulated the reproduction and recognition of human speech.

In the second round, the tasks were devoted to the possibilities of high-tech greenhouse facilities for hydroponic cultivation of cucumbers. The research in this task was aimed at determining the parameters of water and nutrient solution, studying the movement of water in plants, modeling the hydroponic system and studying its parameters for growing cucumbers in the most efficient way possible.
