Cloud Maturity Improves Operational Efficiency – Linux Magazine

HashiCorp, Inc. (NASDAQ: HCP), a leading provider of automation software for multi-cloud infrastructure, today announced their 2023 State of Cloud Strategy study at HashiCorpDays in London, showing that organizations with high adoption maturity are standardizing and scale their multi-cloud deployment, driving positive business outcomes.

This study, again commissioned by HashiCorp and conducted by Forrester Consulting, focuses on operational cloud maturity. It is defined by the application of a combination of technological and organizational best practices. The results show that organizations with a high degree of cloud maturity experience the most benefits in terms of security, governance, reliability and costs. Organizations also reported that their most common barrier to multi-cloud was a cloud skills shortage, indicating that attracting, nurturing and retaining technical talent remains an industry-wide challenge.

The main results are:

  • 56% of respondents increased cloud spending in the past year: Despite an uncertain macroeconomic environment, more than half of respondents continue to increase cloud spending. Nearly all respondents report opportunities to optimize that spend, and more than half of mature organizations say their multi-cloud strategy actually helps them save money.
  • 92% of mature organizations believe multi-cloud works:
73% of all respondents say multi-cloud helps them achieve business goals and a further 19% say they expect this to be the case in the coming year.
  • The skills shortage is the main barrier to multi-cloud: All respondents say the lack of skilled cloud talent is their most common problem, hindering companies in their ability to operationalize multi-cloud. However, mature organizations have an important advantage: 74% say their multi-cloud strategy helps them attract, motivate and retain talent.
  • Security is the biggest advantage of multi-cloud: Respondents cite security as the most important factor in multi-cloud success and the most common benefit of a multi-cloud strategy. While multi-cloud can clearly present security challenges, operating across multiple cloud environments can also help organizations keep their security professionals engaged. In addition, it can also be a motivation for more conscious supervision of security activities.
  • 92% of respondents are building platform teams (17%), standardizing (36%) or scaling (39%): Of companies with the most mature cloud operations, 69% are expanding platform teams, compared to only 17% of low-maturity organizations. Platform teams are clearly becoming an essential part of companies’ cloud adoption journey.

“Our State of Cloud Strategy Survey this year shows significant differences between high-maturity organizations that are advanced in their cloud journey versus low-maturity organizations that have yet to standardize,” said Armon Dadgar, co-founder and CTO of Hashi Corp. “While low-maturity organizations struggle with staffing, security and costs, high-maturity organizations are able to leverage their multi-cloud approach to attract and retain talent, deploy platform teams, save money and improve security. The results confirm that as organizations progress with their cloud adoption, they realize significant benefits that improve both technical and business outcomes.”

About the investigation

For this third annual study, commissioned by HashiCorp, Forrester Consulting surveyed nearly 1,000 technology experts and decision-makers in various industries around the world, drawn from random samples and HashiCorp’s opt-in contact database.
