How to choose and use sunscreen? – Personal care – Health

Sun protection is a mandatory and necessary step in the care of those whose skin is exposed to the aggressive effects of the sun.

How to properly protect your skin from the hot summer sun, we will try to tell in this article.

The main requirement for a protective cream is the absence of an irritating effect, the ability to easily spread and cover the skin with an elastic film that should not tear and at the same time should be easily washed off.

As you know, the sun emits three main types of ultraviolet rays:

• ultraviolet A
– its rays do not cause burns, they are more insidious: they are accused of irreversible (including carcinogenic) effects on the skin;

• ultraviolet B – its rays, which contribute to the production of vitamin D in the skin, as well as melanin, cause redness and burns of the skin;

• ultraviolet C
– These are the most dangerous and deadly rays. Scientists are convinced that the ozone layer of the atmosphere in our latitudes still filters out C-rays.

When choosing a sunscreen, you should pay attention to the SPF – the sun protection factor. It is indicated on the package with numbers from 3 to 30. For example, SPF 15 means that when applied, you can stay in the sun 15 times longer than without protection. That is, the higher this coefficient, the longer your skin will be protected.

There are two types of sunscreens based on their composition: blocking the sun’s rays and shielding them.

Shielding sunscreen form a film on the skin that absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Moreover, most screening creams are effective only against ultraviolet B and let through more harmful A-rays. Thus, these creams, allowing you to stay under the sun longer without visible burns, thereby increase the time of exposure to the most dangerous carcinogenic ultraviolet radiation. If you use a screening cream, pay attention to its composition. It is better to use one that contains avobenzone (or parsol 1789) – a substance that protects against both ultraviolet A and B.

The disadvantage of shielding creams is that they penetrate the skin and (in small quantities) enter the body through the blood. In addition, some of them can cause allergies.

To avoid both, they developed blocking creams. These are light-protective substances based on titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Consisting of these finely ground mineral pigments, blocking creams remain on the surface of the skin and physically reflect (block) UVA and UVB.

For those who like to swim, products containing water-repellent components (the tube should be labeled “Waterproof”). Due to the special composition, these preparations actively protect the skin even after an hour in the water. But even if you used a product with a high degree of protection during bathing, after that you still need to dry yourself thoroughly and reapply a waterproof cream.

Sunscreen expiration date – six months from the start of use. But if you store them in a cool place, they will last longer. If the cream has changed its texture, color or smell, then you should not use it.

Let us draw your attention to the fact that protective creams on the face and body should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure, since their filters begin to act only after complete absorption. It is enough to apply it in a small amount on the surface of the skin and let it absorb a little. Strongly rub the cream into the skin should not be, because with intensive rubbing the effectiveness of the cream is reduced by 25%.

When properly applied, it will take approximately 6 teaspoons of cream to cover the entire body. Despite the fact that high protection creams keep your skin from burning for several hours, it still should be repeated every 2-3 hours. And until the tan has become uniform, you should not be in direct sunlight for more than an hour. And one more thing: the SPF level of a face sunscreen can exceed the index of a body product, but not vice versa.
