Netflix balances series: According to this blatant principle! | BRAVO – Digikar

🍿 REVIEWS News – Paris/France.

Netflix launches series in the agreement

Everyone knows it: you’ve discovered a new series on Netflix, browsed through it and eagerly awaited new episodes. But then: Netflix cancels your favorite series. There will be no more new seasons. It’s over and it’s done – you can think the story through for yourself 🤬. WHAT?!

In 2022, many popular series – which were totally hyped in the beginning – fell victim to the cancellation ax and are now on the RIP list 🪦:

  • « Archives 81 »
  • Raising Dion
  • “First Murder”
  • “Space Force”
  • ” Another life “

… just to name a few. Some series are even canceled WHILE they are still in production. HARD!

But why is Netflix so egregious and what system is behind the killing strategy?

Netflix’s strategy for success

The thing is, Netflix has faced stiff competition from other streaming platforms. Streaming these last years. You lose subscribers and the prices of productions don’t go down either (looking at you, Corona and energy prices 👀). It is therefore carefully thought out in which projects and series to invest.

Cancellation factors

Netflix never officially explains or explains in detail why a series is canceled. But it’s definitely – as always – about the money!

It is very likely that Netflix calculates EXACTLY the financial performance of a series. More importantly, how much did it cost to produce and how much did the series earn? For example, “Squid Game” was a boon for Netflix: The first season cost $21.4 million to produce and grossed around $900 million. That’s almost 43 times! Of course, DAS will continue!

However, if a series falls below a certain cost-benefit ratio, it is unlikely to be continued. Even if it pays MORE than it costs! Where Netflix draws the line is unknown.

But HOW does Netflix calculate how much a show has earned? After all, we pay flat subscription fees or shared accounts (of course only in the family 🤭) and do not pay rental fees or ticket prices for a specific series…

Subscribers decide serial death

Even if we don’t like to hear it: In the end, each viewer decides the fate of the series – with the behavior of the gaze. These include:

What do new accounts/users look at? This probably matters more than the passions of regular customers. Because we can assume that the series that a newcomer to Netflix is watching prompted him to subscribe to the service.

What percentage of fans have watched a series? For example, only 43% of viewers who watched the first episode of the teen vampire series First Kill also watched the series finale. This means less than half of fans have watched the entire series. A sign for Netflix that the show might not be entertaining enough to watch them to the end. Episode: “First Kill” was killed after the first season. For comparison: 75% watched the LGBTQ series “Heartstopper” until the end. A second season has been guaranteed by Netflix.

How well does a series hold up on the Netflix charts? Netflix has been publishing its own rankings for about two years (you can see the list of results from Netflix HERE) and lists content that is currently particularly popular. But: there were already many series in the charts which were then canceled! WHY? The solution: it does not necessarily depend on the position on the chartbut obviously more about how long a show is watched and how long it stays on the charts.

Netflix calculates charts based on the number of hours fans have watched a show.

Example: The hit horror series “Archive 81” entered the charts at number 7 in January 2022, with 22 million hours watched. In the second week, it was 71 million hours, rising to number 2. Up 219%. The problem: In week three, it was still in third place, but could only book 36 million hours. (Source)

A minus of almost -50%. After the third week, “Archive 81” could not stay in the top 10. For the platform StreamingThis is likely an indication that the hype around the show only kicked off in a small target group of horror fans and couldn’t carry on to the wider Netflix community. Result: “Archive 81” was cancelled.

How many shows is Netflix really canceling?

We all had to say goodbye to a favorite series because it was suddenly canceled. TO TEAR APART! But does it really happen often? The French analysis site NetflixAndChiffres has looked into the phenomenon for the year 2021.

Netflix series have been divided into four categories:

  1. continued: Series that have already been continued or for which at least one new season has been confirmed. RATE: 42.2%
  2. Firm: Series that simply ended after several seasons and found a very natural ending. RATE: 23.3%
  3. undecided: Series for which a decision is still pending. RATE: 26.7%
  4. canceled: Interrupted series without the story being told to the end. RATE: 7.8%

Non-US productions (i.e. productions from countries other than the United States) found themselves on the RIP list particularly frequently.

If the series whose status is currently still “undecided” are then all cancelled, the share goes from nearly 8% to nearly 35% cancellation rate.

Incidentally, in 2020% it will end at 33%.

In short: it seems that Netflix is canceling one out of three series.

Aie.
