‘The Big Move to AVOD’: Why Viewers Are Flocking to Ad-Supported Streaming | Video – Digikar

WrapPRO hosted a virtual panel on Thursday, TheGrill: Focus on AVOD presented by FilmRise

As inflation is expected to give way to recession over the coming year, consumers are expected to become increasingly frugal with their money, including what they spend on entertainment. It has become urgent for the entertainment industry to establish Streaming cheaper and even free ad-supported to offer its cash-strapped customers.

And the entertainment industry knows it: Disney and Netflix both plan to offer ad-supported options in the near future, while Warner Bros. Discovery is developing its own ad-supported free television service (or FAST).

“There just isn’t an overwhelming urge among consumers to add more paid subscriptions to their monthly budgets, especially as we head into all that recession talk. And we know the demand for content is greater than ever. So this is an extremely positive story for those involved in the creation and distribution of advertising content,” said Daniel Christman, senior vice president of the cross-platform group at Screen Engine/ASI, during WrapPRO’s virtual panel Thursday, TheGrill: Focus on AVOD presented by FilmRise. .

Moderated by Brandon Katz of TheWrap, Christman was joined on the panel by industry experts Tejas Shah, SVP of Business Strategy and Analytics at FilmRise; Katina Papas Wachter, Head of Ad Revenue Strategy at Roku; and Alysha Dino, Senior Director of Publisher Development at Publica.

According to a Screen Engine/ASI and FilmRise report provided exclusively to TheWrap, one in five consumers plan to add a Streaming more video on demand (SVOD) over the next year, while 79% say they will keep or even reduce their current subscriptions.

But the adoption of video advertising on demand (or AVOD) services is not necessarily new.

“The big shift to AVOD is a consumer trend that was still happening before the pandemic,” Dino said. “Every household experienced a global lockdown, which naturally accelerated the discovery of AVOD. There are other variables to consider that are often not talked about, such as the cost of living crisis. Thus, the prices increase on everyday items, which will naturally encourage people to search for services of Streaming ad-supported or more affordable ad-supported SVOD services.
