The government of The US announced that it set aside $40 billion to connect every American to broadband. The investment is enshrined in a new law supported by the country’s two main parties.

US President Joe Biden is taking further steps to bring broadband internet to people in the American interior. According to a publication by The Verge, the measures are provided for in the adopted law on infrastructure investment and employment. More than 40 billion dollars have been allocated for these purposes.

Supported by both major parties in the US, the law provides for the allocation of funds for the development of high-speed Internet infrastructure to individual states, each of which will receive a certain amount of money, but not less than $100 million.

The Biden administration aims to connect all Americans to broadband by 2030. The funding decisions were made Monday based on recently updated broadband coverage maps. They now include more than a million new locations.

In the White House, the plan is compared to Franklin Roosevelt’s project, which at the time implemented the rural electrification of the United States (Rural Electrification Act). The new project is said to bring investment, jobs and new opportunities directly to the working and middle classes.

Individual states are expected to submit their own distribution plans by December, and the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) plans to approve those plans by early next spring, when 20 percent of the funds will be distributed. By the end of 2025, at least 80% of the money must be distributed. The White House will determine how much each state will receive.

Earlier this month, the NTIA announced $930 million in funding for 35 broadband projects known as the “middle mile” — to connect large fiber optic networks to smaller local area networks, which in turn provide Internet connectivity to households.

The US authorities were expected to invest more than 90 billion dollars in the development of broadband Internet in rural areas, but the amount was reduced by more than half. Additionally, the Pandemic Act of 2021 allocated more than $25 billion to build broadband infrastructure and subsidize the cost of connected devices for low-income people.

According to NTIA, the Middle Mile program has accelerated the construction of universal connectivity in the US. It will provide broadband access to local networks and reduce the cost of implementing local projects in the future.
