Super Mario RPG remake announced

Nintendo revealed a remake of Super Mario RPG during the Nintendo Direct conference, this Wednesday (21).

The original game was released in 1996 for the Super Nintendo and was developed in partnership with Squaresoft, now called Square Enix – a well-known developer of RPGs, such as the Final Fantasy franchise.

The new version of the Mario RPG game updates the old graphics and features a fully 3D version. In addition, the exploration system and turn-based combat from the original game are still present in the game.

Super Mario RPG arrives on November 17th for Nintendo Switch.

More on the original Super Mario RPG

Super Mario RPG features a unique story where the Mushroom Kingdom is invaded by a powerful enemy named Smithy and his followers. Mario, along with his allies, including charismatic companion Mallow, princess Toadstool (Peach), stalwart Bowser and enigmatic Geno, embark on an adventure to defeat Smithy and restore peace to the kingdom.

The game combines elements of platforming, exploration, and turn-based battles. Players explore diverse locations, interact with non-player characters, solve puzzles and face enemies in turn-based battles. Battles feature an active timing mechanic where you can perform more powerful attacks by pressing the button at the right time.

Super Mario RPG is known for its vibrant visual style, colorful graphics and charismatic characters. It also has light humor and lots of references to previous Mario games, which adds a layer of nostalgia for fans of the series.

In addition, the game introduced striking new characters such as Geno, a star puppet with special abilities, and Mallow, a cloud being who can control the weather. These characters joined Mario’s team, adding diversity and variety to the skills available during battles.

Super Mario RPG was very well received by critics and audiences, praised for its immersive gameplay, captivating narrative and the way it managed to combine elements of the Mario universe with the RPG genre. The game became a cult classic and paved the way for the development of future role-playing games in the Mario franchise, such as the “Mario & Luigi” series.

Although it didn’t have a direct sequel, Super Mario RPG’s impact continues to be felt in the gaming industry to this day. The game is remembered as a unique collaboration between Nintendo and Squaresoft and one of the first and most successful fusions between Mario gameplay and the RPG genre.
